When we want to contour and shape our face, to enhance our best features, we must use a product that will imitate a shadow. And a shadow is gray, is cold and matte. If we look at a painting , this technique is used to create dimension, so that the canvas will not look flat. This is what happens to us when we apply a foundation, we are left with a uniform surface and we need to bring our features back to life.

We need to sculp the cheekbones, nose, forehead, jaws and make our face slimmer or rounder, depending on what we are dealing with. For a flawless and lasting makeup during the day we can choose to use a contour powder or to use a cream/liquid contour and set it with a contour powder.

Today we will focus on the cream contour as it is very difficult the find a quality cool gray tone on the market which is what we need when sculpting the face features. And this product is the one and only, viral, well established in the makeup world Anastasia Beverly Hills’s Contour stick.

Application

I have left here a short video on how to apply the contour stick. Remember not to make it directly from the bullet by drawing on your face. Sure, it’s easy to blend and it will not set immediately, but why not be in control and diffuse it with a fluffy brush? Why to leave heavy marks and to lift the product underneath by blending too hard?

Apply the product on the back of your hand and push the bristles of the brush so it can saturate with the cream. Apply then on the important places by stippling. Or you can take product directly from the bullet with the brush and apply it on the desired places.

According to your face anatomy and the beauty standards of our times, there are different placements of the contour. And we will talk more about it in detail in a separate post. We will learn where to contour on a round face, an elongated face, closed set eyes and so on.

Swatches

There are 3 available shades in the contour stick range. All of them are cool tones cream sticks that imitate a shadow, so it helps shape the face.

Shadow – for fair skin tones, cool caramel latte

Fawn for light to light-medium skin tones, cool cafe latte

Mink– for medium to medium-tan skin tones, cool toasted almond

Performance

For a cream stick contour, the product blended very well into the skin. It was not patchy, so it didn’t lift the foundation underneath. It’s well pigmented and buildable. I would recommend to gradually build the shade because it’s easier to add color than to correct after. The finish is natural and matte.

It lasts well throughout the day and for bridal makeup or glam makeup you enforce it with powder contour for longevity.

Pros

The ABH contour stick is the only product that I have found until now that works for light skin tones, because of the undertone. The undertone is cool and it really looks like a shadow. The coverage is buildable, so it means you can start with a little quantity and add more if needed, without looking cakey.

The finish is matte, which is what you need for a shadow on your face.

Pricewise, the quantity is very good reported to the price. Anastasia Beverly Hills is doing a great job at pricing it’s products and it is something to respect nowadays.

Cons

Some reviewers are complaining that the product is kind of hard to work with because it is more on the dry side. I didn’t find it like that,  because I personally warm the product on the back of my hand and it goes very smooth on my skin. So I don’t even need to rub and be harsh on the skin.

I understand where the issue is coming from, as there are many products on the market that are liquid or creamy. But this one is a stick cream formula. I have my “Fawn” favorite shade for a few months now and it has not dried in the bullet. I work with a fluffy brush and it blends easy without rubbing.

If you have this contour stick in your makeup bag or makeup kit, please leave a comment with your opinion on it.
